As part of Muharraq Nights’ Art Shutters installations, we were tasked with activating the Bu Maher area through a participatory artwork. The goal was to create an engaging experience that drew visitors into the space, encouraged interaction, and celebrated Bahrain’s cultural heritage in a way that felt contemporary and inclusive.
We created the concept “Hiyakat Hikaya” "حياكة حكاية" (Weaving a Tale)—an interactive artwork celebrating the legacy of Bahraini storytelling across generations. The installation emphasized how the past, present, and future are interconnected through culture, memory, and community. It was intentionally incomplete, designed to be fulfilled only when visitors engaged with it. A central chair was placed at the heart of the piece, inviting visitors to sit and symbolically represent the present generation continuing Bahrain’s story.
The artwork incorporated symbolic elements tied to Bahraini heritage: interlaced nets representing shared stories and social cohesion, and hand imprints honoring the generations who shaped the country’s identity. Every detail—from materials to layout—was crafted to spark reflection, dialogue, and personal interpretation, transforming the audience from passive observers into active participants. By merging traditional cultural motifs with a contemporary interactive approach, the installation created a space that was visually striking, meaningful, and immersive, while also bringing life to the Bu Maher area during Muharraq Nights.
The installation became a focal point at Muharraq Nights, engaging audiences of all ages. Visitors interacted with the 3 m by 4 m shutter, which was frequently packed, and interpreted the piece in their own words, creating a living dialogue between art and community. Our work brought the usually quiet Bu Maher area to life, with guests taking selfies, sharing experiences on social media, and even months later continuing to use images from the installation as profile pictures. Our custom stickers remain popular, and we received feedback from visitors across Bahrain, KSA, UAE, and beyond—making the project a resounding success both as an artistic and social experience.
